Newhaven’s fishing industry is set to benefit from post-Brexit freedoms being utilised by the Government.
Seizing the opportunities of our freedoms outside the EU, the UK government is introducing a world class system of fisheries management which draws on the best available science and the expertise of our fishermen and anglers to ensure our fish stocks are healthy and sustainable long into the future.
Since we left the EU, we have taken some important steps for our fishing industry. As an independent coastal state, we have successfully negotiated a significant uplift in fishing opportunities for UK vessels, valued at around £101 million this year. We are also investing in the long-term future of the UK fisheries sector through our £100 million UK Seafood Fund, helping to drive innovation, support job creation, and boost seafood exports to new markets. As we replace the Common Fisheries Policy with our own domestic policy that better suits our fisheries, we are determined to make the most of our newfound freedoms to introduce a world class system of fisheries management.
These measures alongside previously announced plans from the Levelling Up Fund for new fisheries landing stages in Newhaven will ensure a thriving fishing industry in Newhaven for years to come. Work on the new landing stages is due to start shortly.
Maria Caulfield MP said “Newhaven’s fishing industry and all those who work within it are set to benefit from these planned changes to the fishing industry now that we have left the EU and the Common Fisheries Policy that has held the industry back for so long.
“These nationwide plans on top of the direct Government funding coming into Newhaven, in the form of the Future High Streets fund for new fisheries landing stages, will be a huge boost to the local fishing industry and the wider economy in the town. I am looking forward to seeing the impact that this Government support will have on Newhaven.”
