Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, has welcomed that East Sussex County Council have published a plan for how they will spend the first tranche of £52 million of government funding to resurface roads in the county.
It was announced last year that East Sussex County Council were being awarded an additional £52 million over the next 10 years – with the money being found from savings by the scrapping of Phase 2 of the HS2 project.
Local authorities have been asked by the Department for Transport to produce a plan on how they will spend the investment this year. East Sussex County Council have announced they will be resurfacing 52353 square metres of road.
This is in addition to recent government investment in our roads, where £5.9 million was allocated to East Sussex to fix more potholes.
Road investment in East Sussex has increased significantly over recent years. In 2021/22 the total spend was £34,650,000 in 2024/25 it is projected to be £56,496,000.
This is part of the government and East Sussex County Council’s commitment to visibly better roads.
Commenting, Maria Caulfield MP said:
“The government is quite rightly recognising the blight that potholes are on our community, with this additional investment we should see visibly better roads locally in the near future. A new contractor was appointed in the county last May and the quality of the work has been much improved.”
