Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, has welcomed the news that the Day Travelcard has been saved after the Labour Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, U-turned on his decision to scrap it.
If the proposed scrapping of the day travelcard had gone ahead this could have cost the residents of the Lewes constituency up to an additional £9.30 a day to travel to London.
When this proposal was put forward by the Mayor earlier in the year, Maria worked with neighbouring Sussex MP’s in campaigning to save it and a petition was signed by hundreds of constituents across Lewes.
Maria Caulfield MP said:
“I am extremely pleased that Sadiq Khan has listened to the hundreds of local residents who contacted me regarding the day travel card and has reversed his decision.
It seems bizarre that the Mayor wanted to make it more expensive to use public transport at the same time making it more expensive to drive in London with his expansion of ULEZ - a £12.50 daily drivers’ tax.”
