Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, has welcomed a parliamentary bill which will ban the export of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and horses for slaughter and fattening from Great Britain.
The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill will strengthen our animal welfare standards still further by stopping the stress, exhaustion and injury caused by the unnecessary slaughter and fattening export trade. The Bill will also ensure animals are slaughtered domestically, in our high welfare UK slaughterhouses.
When a consultation was run on the issue 11,000 people responded, and 87% of these supported a ban.
Maria Caulfield MP said:
“I am very pleased to be supporting this bill in parliament, it was one of our manifesto commitments to end live animal exports and as we are no longer members of the European Union it means that this is now possible.”
