Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, welcomes the Serious Violence Reduction Order to crack down on crime across Lewes.
SVROs are a new civil order that can be issued to convicted offenders by the court and will give police officers the power to stop and search a person, subject to an order, to look for knives or offensive weapons.
Currently too many criminals who carry knives and weapons go on to offend time and again. That is why the Government is introducing the Serious Violence Reduction Order (SVRO) pilot to help end that cycle and Lewes has been included in this pilot.
Maria Caulfield MP said:
“I am very much encouraged by the SVRO (Serious Violence Reduction Order) pilot being introduced in April 2023 in Lewes’ police force.
The orders are intended to deter offenders from carrying weapons as there is a greater likelihood of being caught and brought to justice; and provide them with a credible basis for distancing themselves from weapon-carrying and other criminal behaviour.
I am very pleased the Government have given police more powers and resources to catch criminals and take knives and other dangerous weapons off our streets, including through the recruitment of 20,000 additional officers.”
