Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, was thrilled to attend St Andrew’s Church in Alfriston along with residents for the commemorative evening service for St Georges’ Day on Sunday 23rd April.
The occasion was the annual service of The Royal Society of St George where as part of the tradition, the church service began and the bells rang at 18:00 to declare St George.
This was followed by the annual dinner at Deans Place, Alfriston, where the Ceremony of the beef took place with the chef.
St George’s reputation for brave and chivalrous conduct was the spiritual inspiration of the Crusaders, and a red cross on a white or silver background became the means of recognising the English knights.
Maria Caulfield MP said:
“I greatly enjoyed this evening celebrating St George’s Day in St Andrew’s Church, Alfriston, for the 18:00 bells followed by an amazing meal in Deans Place cooked by their brilliant chef.
The Ceremony of the Beef is always a lovely tradition as part of St George’s Day where we celebrate with the talented chef who enjoys a pint of beer prior to the meal.
Thank you to the Royal Society of St George for their hard work as always organising this special evening.”
