Lewes MP Maria Caulfield has become a CPRE Rooftop Solar Champion and is supporting the unlocking the potential of rooftop solar power.
The potential of 'grey space' - our rooftops and car parks - for hosting solar capacity is huge. Research by CPRE has shown that installing solar panels on existing rooftops and other land such as car parks could provide at least 40-50GW in England by 2035 and that in 2050, with further investment, there is potential to generate 117GW of low carbon electricity from roofs and other developed spaces.
Maria Caulfield MP said “We have recently seen large scale planning applications in various parts of Sussex for huge solar farms on greenfield spaces. But there is huge potential for solar capacity right above our heads, on our rooftops and above car parks that could provide huge potential for clean, renewable energy generation, without the need for removing huge areas of agricultural land.
“This is why I am joining CPRE in becoming a Rooftop Solar Champion and promoting the use of these grey spaces for generating solar energy.”
