Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, is supporting the charity walk by Cathy Brokenshire, the wife of the late James Brokenshire MP, who passed away from lung cancer at the age of 53 in 2021.
Cathy is doing a 13-mile walk from Seaford to Eastbourne on Thursday 26th October to raise funds and awareness for lung cancer.
In the last few months there has been huge progress in the fight for a new NHS Lung Cancer Screening programme, which has now been agreed and will be rolled out across the UK by 2028. As many as 9,000 lives could be saved annually.
But there is still so much more to do in the fight against lung cancer. The long-term effects of vaping, and indeed Covid, still aren’t fully understood. 25% of lung cancer sufferers never smoked, like James, and there is much more research to do in this area too.
Early diagnosis is a real game changer giving better outcomes to those with lung cancer, when detected early it will save lives , keeping loved ones and families together and screening will do this.
With extra screening, research has a far greater importance and therefore, just ahead of lung cancer awareness month in November, Cathy is asking for donations for her walk in support of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
Maria Caulfield MP said:
“I am fully supporting Cathy Brokenshire in her charity walk for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. From James’ initial diagnosis in 2017 until his passing in 2021 he was an indefatigable campaigner for better lung cancer screening, becoming the first MP to host a debate on the floor of the House of Commons on this important matter and I am so pleased that Cathy is continuing his work in this area”
