Following a Statement on Mental Health and NHS Performance, the Member of Parliament for Lewes, Maria Caulfield, and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt have paid tribute to mental health care nurses in Sussex, as well as Sussex Police.
The comments followed the Lewes MP outlining how through joint working, the two agencies have been able to reduce the number of patients being placed in a prison cell as a place of safety by 50%, which is of particular importance when considering that two suicide hot spots, Beachy Head and Birling Gap, fall within the county.
The Lewes MP and practicing nurse also welcomed the Health Secretaries tribute to frontline staff within the NHS, confirming that as someone that worked in the NHS over the Christmas period she has been able to see first hand the pressures being faced, although she made clear that these were winter pressures that had been familiar to her for the whole of her twenty years working in the NHS.
