Statement from the Member of Parliament for Lewes: Proposed Caviar Farm in East Chiltington
I recently wrote to residents asking for their views on this proposal and I thank you for your feedback. I know that officers at Lewes District Council are recommending that permission is to be given and that this application will now come forward to the planning committee for a final decision. Given the overwhelming objection from residents and given the very technical nature of this application and concerns over environmental damage and water pollution , I have written to the Secretary of State, requesting that he moves to call in the application.
This means that if approved at planning committee the scheme will have to be reviewed by the Secretary of State so that concerns raised by residents are fully assessed before a decision is taken. The Secretary of State has the power to refuse the application.
My decision to call in the application is not to undermine the decision making powers of local councillors but to ensure that adequate assessments of the concerns of residents are made before a decision is reached.
I hope this reassures you that I take your concerns very seriously.
