East Sussex County Council has secured £1,820,200 of government funding for cycling and walking schemes across the county including in the Lewes constituency.
The schemes that will be of benefit locally in Lewes have been welcomed by Maria Caulfield MP.
These include the Newhaven & Lewes Local Cycling & Walking Infrastructure Plan Package, which will be a combined package of measures including resurfacing of footways, installing new or repairing tactile paving, dropped kerbs, removing overgrown vegetation, footway widening.
Lewes – Southover Road to Brighton Road
The scheme in Lewes between Southover Road and Brighton Road focuses on footway improvements and widening, alongside provision of dropped kerbing and tactile paving at junction crossings. All of these improvements are permanent interventions.
Newhaven – Drove Road to Denton Road
The scheme in Newhaven between Drove Road and Denton Road focuses on footway improvements and widening, alongside provision of dropped kerbing and tactile paving at junction crossings, and vegetation clearance. All of these improvements are permanent interventions.
Footway improvements, resurfacing and widening are focused along Avis Road and Avis Way. Tactile pavement improvements and dropped kerbs are located along New Road, Avis Way and Denton Road/Denton Drive, with vegetation clearance also on Avis Way.
Falmer to Woodingdean
The funding will also be used in conjunction with Brighton & Hove City Council and the South Downs National Park to improve and resurface the existing multi-user path between Woodingdean and Falmer.
Maria Caulfield MP said “This government funding of over £1.8 million for East Sussex will make a big difference in my Lewes constituency. Many residents have raised concerns about the number of dropped kerbs around Lewes and Newhaven and this government funding will make a real difference. Improvements to the Falmer to Woodingdean path will be much welcomed by the many who use it on a regular basis.”
Cllr Liz Boorman said “I am grateful to the Conservative government for this funding that will really help improve accessibility in Newhaven for pedestrians and cyclists.”
