Maria Caulfield MP has welcomed the announcement by the Health Secretary that the NHS in England is to recruit 21,000 new mental health workers.
Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has made the ambitious announcement as part of a plan to tackle the historic imbalance between mental and physical health care. It is believed that the extra staff will be able to treat an additional million people with mental health care needs.
Maria Caulfield MP said “Both working as a nurse for over 20 years and during my time in Parliament it has been clear that historically there has not be parity between mental and physical health.”
“Recent research from Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust shows people with mental health problems are likely to die 20 years younger than other people. This needs to be addressed, and I am hopeful that this ambitious target can be met and will make a huge difference to those in need of mental health treatment.”
