Following the announcement that UTC@Harbourside may have to close Newhaven’s MP, Maria Caulfield, has promised to fight to ensure the college remains in the town.
UTC@harbourside is a University Technology College in Newhaven, East Sussex, that delivers specialist courses in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computing to 14 to 18 year olds.
Maria Caulfield is confident that another educational trust will be found which will enable the college it to remain open, rather than close. If another backer is found for the college this would enable the continued educational provision in the town.
The Department for Education has started a consultation on what should happen once the current funding agreement comes to an end in August 2019. The consultation can be found at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/EWDA2
Maria Caulfield MP said “It is so important that Newhaven and the wider area has the provision of a technical college specialising in subjects such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computing. We have interested parties willing to take the college on and I will be working with the Department for Education to ensure that a solution can be found enabling such a college to remain on the site, with or without its current backers.”
“I would urge all interested constituents whether they are staff, students or parents and carers to put their views forward in the consultation to reinforce my message that we need the college to remain open in Newhaven.”
