International schemes such as Erasmus+ can be transformational for students and I support initiatives that help young people gain international experience.
The UK has been closely involved in the development of the current Erasmus+ programme and I have satisfied myself that the Department for Education is fully exploring the option of participating in the next Erasmus programme. As you are aware, the European Commission has published its proposals for the 2021-2027 successor scheme. I understand colleagues in the Department for Education are considering these carefully and will contribute to discussions on them while we remain in the EU.
The Erasmus programme Is made up of a number of non EU countries and we are able to continue to participate on a bilateral basis and this decision will be taken shortly by the Government.
